John L. Thunder, often called Johnny Thunder, is a DC Comics character who debuted in 1940 as a member of the Justice Society of America. He's known for his apparent clumsiness and dimwitted nature, but secretly possessed immense power tied to a magical genie-like entity.

This being, initially called the Thunderbolt, resided within a pinky ring worn by Johnny. By saying the phrase "Say, you!", Johnny could command the Thunderbolt to perform incredible feats, though often with unpredictable and humorous results due to his vague or poorly phrased commands.

Despite his perceived lack of intelligence, Johnny was a valuable member of the JSA for many years. The Thunderbolt would eventually become a sentient being, Yz, with his own distinct personality and motivations. Johnny's relationship with Yz and the understanding of his own powers evolved over time.

He has appeared in various DC storylines, often portraying a character whose unassuming demeanor hides a potent, albeit chaotic, source of power. His appearances fluctuate across different timelines and reboots, but the core concept of the seemingly simple man and his magical genie-like companion remains consistent.
